Sound System Re-commissioning:
Many existing sound systems have never performed up to their potential. How can you tell? If you listen to someone over a microphone and their voice does not sound like the person’s nature voice, or if a CD is played through the system and it needs to be equalized to sound good, like it does over a pair of headphones, or if the speakers hiss and feedback occurs often, your system probably has not been commissioned correctly. This commissioning includes the proper adjustment of all control settings within a sound system. From setting all the knobs on your mixing console, to computer-controlled settings in you DSP (Digital Signal Processor), to the slide-fader positions on your graphic equalizer, to the volume levels on your power amplifiers, we do it all. We use the most up-to-date computerized measurement available today to commission your system and document all the settings for your records.
Intelligibility Testing and System Performance Documentation:
OSS can measure a system’s proof of performance in a myriad of ways. Whether it is to confirm newly made improvements, document the shortcomings of the existing configuration, or to perform the required 3rd-party Speech Transmission Index (STI) measurements for compliance with the new 2010 NFPA-72 fire code, we have the equipment and know-how to show you just how well or badly your system is performing.

Recommendations for System Improvements:
In some situations, the existing system can be significantly improved by upgrading to newer equipment employing more up-to-date technology. In others, the existing system may not have employed the proper technical solution for the facility to begin with. In these cases, OSS will recommend what items need upgrading within your existing system, always with overriding intent not to replace any existing equipment unnecessarily. Remember, OSS does not sell equipment, so there is never any temptation to oversell equipment upgrades.
Creating RFP Packages for System Improvements:
In the cases where existing systems do need equipment upgrades to improve performance, OSS can create simple Request For Proposal (RFP) packages for system upgrades. This is not to infer that we can create large bid packages for sweeping system renovations involving architects and multiple trades. Expensive bid packages are the job of full-fledged consulting firms that are regularly involved in projects of this scope. OSS will recommend the country’s best full-fledged consulting firms for these larger project endeavors. However, for small contracts that only involve system improvements primarily carried out by system integrators, OSS can create the RFP for these smaller projects. We will also help the owner select the bidders, evaluate the proposals, supervise and finalize the resulting contract to completion.

From how to operate a mixing console, to setting system gain structure, to equalizing speakers, with a 20-year background in training sound professionals, OSS can present sound system fundamentals at a level that is easily understood by the novice or volunteer. In many cases, system-operator education can result in drastic improvements to sound-system performance. |
